The 87 crew members of the fighter planes who fell above the Hoeksche Waard during the Second World War are honored in the digital monument Air War Hoeksche Waard 1940-1945. All crashes can also be read digitally. In total, about 120 QR codes can be scanned with the mobile phone at the monument at the Anthonie van Leeuwenhoekstraat in Oud-Beijerland. Anton de Man, who erected the war memorial a few years ago, has informed the relatives of mainly British and Canadian victims. “They think it’s wonderful that we do that for them in the Hoeksche Waard,” he says. Every year many British and Canadian family members of killed crew members also come to Oud-Beijerland for a commemoration. “That will also happen this year. Especially now that the digital monument is a lot further and we celebrate 75 years of liberation this year. ” Every crew member who has died has their own QR tile in Oud-Beijerland, but information is not available from everyone. De Man is still busy requesting information in England, New Zealand and Norway. “But that is getting more and more difficult. It has also been a long time ago, “he says. However, he has good hopes for Poland.” A Polish plane also crashed in the Hoeksche Waard during the Second World War. We would also like to have the information from those crew members so that we can honor them . ” De Man is proud of the digital addition to the physical monument. “We have now realized everything I especially wanted,” he says. “I want to emphasize that we could not have done this without the help of the municipality of Oud-Beijerland, at the time, and now the municipality of Hoeksche Waard. De 87 bemanningsleden van de gevechtsvliegtuigen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog boven de Hoeksche Waard zijn gesneuveld, worden geëerd in het digitaal monument Luchtoorlog Hoeksche Waard 1940-1945. Ook alle crashes zijn digitaal na te lezen.
In totaal zijn bij het monument aan de Anthonie van Leeuwenhoekstraat in Oud-Beijerland zo’n 120 QR-codes te scannen met de mobiele telefoon. Wie dat doet, komt terecht bij informatie over de buitenlandse bemanningsleden, crashes en algemene informatie over de (lucht-)oorlog in de Hoeksche Waard. Anton de Man, die het oorlogsmonument enkele jaren geleden oprichtte, heeft de nabestaanden van met name Engelse en Canadese slachtoffers op de hoogte gebracht. „Zij vinden het prachtig dat we dat in de Hoeksche Waard voor hen doen”, zegt hij. Elk jaar komen er ook veel Britse en Canadese familieleden van omgekomen bemanningsleden over naar Oud-Beijerland voor een herdenking. „Dat gaat dit jaar ook gebeuren. Zeker nu het digitale monument weer een stuk verder af is en we dit jaar 75 jaar bevrijding vieren.” Elk omgekomen bemanningslid heeft een eigen QR-tegel in Oud-Beijerland, maar niet van iedereen is informatie beschikbaar. De Man is nog druk bezig om in Engeland, Nieuw-Zeeland en Noorwegen informatie op te vragen. „Maar dat wordt steeds moeilijker. Het is ook al lang geleden”, zegt hij. Goede hoop heeft hij echter op Polen. „Ook een Pools toestel is neergestort in de Hoeksche Waard in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Van die bemanningsleden willen we ook graag de informatie, zodat we hen kunnen eren.” De Man is trots op de digitale toevoeging bij het fysieke monument. „Alles wat ik vooral had gewild, hebben we nu gerealiseerd”, zegt hij. „Ik wil benadrukken dat we dit zonder de hulp van de gemeente Oud-Beijerland, destijds, en nu de gemeente Hoeksche Waard niet hadden kunnen doen. Zij hebben voor de financiën gezorgd. En de jongens van de buitendienst zorgen er voor dat het er altijd netjes uitziet. Als er iets moet gebeuren met de tegels of de boompjes, zijn ze altijd heel snel paraat. Dat is top.”
