Monument for aviators ready – Source: Dichtbij, May 20, 2015
The monument on the Antonie van Leeuwenhoekstraat in Oud-Beijerland, for the fallen airmen of the air war in the Hoeksche Waard, is ready. All work has come to an end with the construction of a wheelchair-friendly entrance to the monument. Four displays of information are shown on a meter-high galvanized pole. In the metal plate at the top aircraft silhouettes are cut out. Initiator Anton de Man, who is a member of the board of the foundation “Monument Air War Hoeksche Waard 1940-1945”, is very satisfied with the progress of the project: “All in all, it takes two and a half years to prepare. Thanks to sponsors and the municipality of Oud-Beijerland, they succeeded. We look forward to 6 June. ” On that day the monument will be unveiled at 11 am, in the presence of many invited guests, family members and even foreign relatives of the 87 people who died in the Hoeksche Waard air war.

Het monument aan de Antonie van Leeuwenhoekstraat in Oud-Beijerland, voor de gesneuvelde vliegeniers van de luchtoorlog in de Hoeksche Waard, is gereed. Met de aanleg van een rolstoelvriendelijk opgang naar het monument is een einde gekomen aan alle werkzaamheden. Op een metershoge gegalvaniseerde paal worden vier displays met informatie getoond, in de metalen plaat in de top zijn vliegtuigsilhouetten uitgesneden. Initiatiefnemer Anton de Man, die deel uit maakt van het bestuur van de stichting ‘Monument Luchtoorlog Hoeksche Waard 1940-1945’ is dik tevreden over het verloop van het project: ‘Al met al zit er toch tweeënhalf jaar voor-bereiding in. Vooral dankzij sponsoren en de gemeente Oud-Beijerland is het dan toch gelukt. We kijken reikhalzend uit naar 6 juni.’ Op die dag zal het monument om 11.00 uur worden onthuld, in het bijzijn van vele genodigden, familieleden en zelfs buitenlandse nabestaanden van de 87 in de luchtoorlog Hoeksche Waard omgekomen personen.
